Biosafety cabinet is clean room equipment that provides an enclosed, well-ventilated contamination free area to conduct experiments and studies on potentially contagious biological samples and high risk pathogens. They are also used to perform experiments involving radioactive isotopes and permitted low degree toxic chemicals.

A biosafety cabinet is equipped with a High Efficiency Particulate Air filter that restricts the flow of bacteria, viruses and other particulate matters within and outside the equipment, thereby acting as a containment area for harmful microbes. Moreover, the unidirectional flow of air prevents the recirculation of trapped microorganisms within the chamber. The biosafety cabinet not only keeps the working area and samples contamination-free, but also protects the user from harmful microbes and noxious fumes while working. The equipment finds widespread use in research organizations, education sector, defense installations, agro-based industries and pharmaceutical industries and is used extensively for tissue culture, recombinant DNA technology experiments and sterility testing.

These equipments use industrial grade timber and high quality mica sheets, stainless steel or other highly resistant, painted or anodized metallic sheets as construction materials, whereas the work station is essentially made up of high grade stainless steel. The biosafety cabinet uses fluorescent lights for illumination and UV light to maintain sterile conditions within the chamber.

These Biosafety Cabinets are classified by CDC into three main groups on the basis of degree of protection provided by the equipment to the samples, user and the environment; Class I, Class II and Class III. Each class finds its use in a niche industry and targets a specific range of activities.

Fume hoods are special ventilation units that provide a conducive environment for working with toxic chemicals and potentially hazardous substances for research, testing or teaching and are seen more commonly in chemical laboratories that deal with toxic fumes and effluents. The equipment is designed to provide effective protection to the user, sample product and the environment from harmful and noxious fumes and dust and vapor generated during routine testing and experiments. The fume hood works by either suction of the exhaust air outside the system through a bypass opening or by bringing in non-conditioned air from the outside directly in front of the hood, which is then exhausted outside. The use of bypass opening for exhaustion of toxic fumes is a more preferred option as it is not affected by climatic changes and provides a more comfortable working environment.

The fume hood uses industrial grade fire resistant timbers and epoxy coated corrosion resistant mild steel as the main construction materials. The equipment may use toughened glass on three sides for better visibility and heavy gauge construction material and high grade stainless steel for work station. Most of the models use epoxy liners or fiberglass reinforced polyester liners, whereas others may also use square corner or coved corner stainless steel, cement board or phenolic resin as liners.

These fume hoods are equipped with safety alarms for overheating and may also feature explosion protection and spill containment as secondary functions. Most of the models are equipped with a heavy duty duct system and use centrifugal impellers with adjustable high speed motors for exhaust system. The diffuser fluorescent lights with vapor-proof covers provide illumination within the chamber even in the presence of fumes and vapor. These biosafety cabinets and fume hoods conform to the international standards and provide a highly reliable and safe working environment.
