Even with the sash closed, potentially hazardous vapors are kept away from the work environment as a result of continuous air flow across the work surface.  An internal by-pass opening, located above the sash, allows a constant exhaust volume while maintaining the face velocity. 

In operation, by-pass fume hoods work automatically in conjunction with the hood sash.  The by-pass fume hood adjustment is made as the sash is opened and closed creating a relatively constant face velocity regardless of sash position.
