It is not difficult to repair a rotary tiller. First, remove the tiller from the tractor or vehicle you have it attached to. Place the tiller on level ground and determine where the tine is that needs to be repaired or replaced.
Second, place the tiller on blocks so that you can see all parts of the tiller below and on top. Third, remove the old tine carefully by unscrewing the bolts that hold it in place. Examine the tine carefully. If it is only dirty, clean if by rubbing the dirt off with a stiff brush. If it is chipped, dented or cracked, replace it with a new one. Clean the housing for the tine before installing a new one.
Fourth, look for a hole that has an indentation surrounding it on each side the tine housing. Place the new tine into the housing, but make sure that the holes of the tine are aligned with the holes on each side.
Fifth, make sure you have gotten the correct hardware for your fertilizer spreader tine. The idea of the properly installed tine is to break away from the housing if the tractor encounters an object that cannot be moved; it needs to break off and not damage the whole tiller or the tractor. This can only be done if the right hardware is holding the tine in place.
Sixth, place a metal washer on the bolt and put it through the hole on your right through the new tine and out the other hole. Place the nut on the end of the bolt on your left and tighten with a wrench. Tighten it thoroughly so that the bolt is secure.
Last, look for other tines power sweeper that may show signs of wear while the tiller is on the blocks. If the tines appear much thinner than the new one or if they are chipped, it’s time to replace them. Repeat this process with any tines that need replacing. Inspect your tiller frequently. Catch problems before they occur, and oil and clean your tiller regularly.
