When it comes to installing the synthetic lawn it is really best done in the hands of professionals who can measure the area, supply the turf and then install it. And this article is for those who have interest in DIY synthetic lawn installing.
The area needs to be cleared of all weeds and grass, this may take some time. Once you are certain everything is dead, it is a good idea to power sweeper clear it all away, along with any big rocks or debris.
Next you will want to level and compact the cleared site. It is important to consider drainage, synthetic grass will not absorb water, and rather the water will run off like it would on concrete.
The base is comprised of various layers, first the earth, then fine stones then, if necessary, a layer of sand to add softness. Once the earth layer is completely dry and compacted the 5mm crushed rocks or moto mower crusher dust may be added and similarly compacted.
A fine layer of sand can then be added to make the surface completely level and ensure that the stones won’t be felt through the synthetic turf. The pieces of turf are now seamed together. Two edges of turf are glued together with a special outdoor turf adhesive and then joined with wide seaming tape. This process can actually be completed by a carpet layer, who would be familiar with the process.
Then comes the infilling process. The intention of infilling is to weigh down the turf and help secure the fibres so as to avoid matting. Thin layers of granulated rubber and sand are applied in four stages, using a fertiliser or drop spreader. After each layer is spread it should be swept with a broom or lightly raked, ensuring the infill has been pushed down to the bottom of the fibre. Finally a power broom may be used to give that added, professional finishing touch.
It will take a few months for the infill to completely work its way down into the fibres, meaning that it may be 3 months until you see the synthetic lawn at its best. Once installed, the lawn rotary tiller will not need mowing or watering and is best cared for by brushing occasionally with a medium-soft bristled brush. Heavy brushing is not necessary and can have a detrimental effect.
