Butterfly valve is one kind of valve of which flap is a disc shape. It can be used for isolating or regulating flow. It is mainly composed of the valve casing, rod, valve disc and sealing. The disc is positioned in the center of the pipe, passing through the disc is a rod connected to an actuator on the outside of the valve. The operation of the butterfly valve is similar with the ball valve, which allows for quick shut off. The flow rate can be controlled by changing the rotation angle of flap disc.

Usually the Soft Seated Butterfly Valve is used for fluid transportation pipe system to cut off or regulate the flow rate. It is one of the fastest developed valves. Its scope of application is really wide and butterfly valve manufacturer is constantly producing more kinds of valves. More high temperature, high pressure, long lifetime and big dimension butterfly valves are made. Some ball valves and gate valves are continually replaced by the butterfly valves. Nowadays the highest pressure which the butterfly valve could bear is more than 40Mpa and the temperature range could be -276~1000 centigrade.

According to the different sealing types of butterfly valve, there are soft seated butterfly valves and metal seated butterfly valves. For the soft seated butterfly valve, the material of one sealing side is metal and another sealing side is flexible nonmetal material such as rubber. Soft seated butterfly valve has good sealing performance. But it can't bear too high temperature and its resistance to wear is low. For the metal seated butterfly valve, the material of both sealing sides is metal such as steel with copper, steel with alloy and so on. This kind of valve has good resistance to high temperature and wearing. But its sealing performance is not as good as soft seated butterfly valve. The soft seated butterfly valve could make "zero leakage". And if there are some corrosivity impurities in the fluid, the metal seated valve must be used instead of the soft seated one.

Regarding the valve structure, the soft seated butterfly valve is an in linear structure while the metal seated valve is single eccentric, double-eccentric or three-eccentric center type. Usually the soft seated valve is used for the normal temperature and low pressure environment while the metal seated one is used for the high temperature and high pressure environment. Applications of soft seated High Performance Butterfly Valve are in the industries such as water treatment, chemical engineering, fossil oil etc. The metal seated butterfly valves are mainly used for the heat addition, coal gas, acid-base environment and so on.
