Characteristics and Application of Butterfly Valve - 2013-06-21 15:06:56
Soft Seated Butterfly Valve was invented in America in the 1930s. It has outstanding advantages over the previous valves, such as good cutting performance, good regulation performance, little leakage, corrosion resistance, low weight, flexible operation, low cost, and so on. Along with the development of processing technology and material industry in the past few years, butterfly valve manufacturers have successfully expanded the application range of this valve largely. Now there are more than 20 structural types for it, which makes it possible to meet diverse requirements. Practically we can say that it could be applied in nearly all the fields, in place of the gate valve, the globe valve, the plug valve, the ball valve and other commonly used valves.
For example, the High Performance Butterfly Valve, especially the one that is DN300mm (nominal diameter) or more in diameter, has been gradually replaced by the butterfly valve recently. This is due to the fact that the butterfly valve needs shorter time to switch on and off, and it is more flexible. For the DN1000mm valves, the butterfly type one weighs about 2 tons, while the gate type one weighs about 3.5 tons. In addition, the butterfly valve cooperates smoothly with various kinds of actuating devices, which usually means better applicability and reliability.
The butterfly valve is manufactured in a variety of materials. The material of valve body may be cast iron, carbon steel or stainless steel, while that of valve stem is generally stainless steel. As for the valve plate, there are more kinds of materials to choose from, including cast iron, malleable cast iron, aluminum bronze, carbon steel, stainless steel, plastics, stainless steel covered by rubber, etc. Also, it is worth saying that there is a new type of material for the valve, PTFE. Excellent chemical resistance is its typical feature. However, the elasticity is not so satisfying. To get higher performance, butterfly valve manufacturer adopted a new technology to stick it to the surface of rubber. The resulting material had integrated characteristics of PTFE and rubber, thus helping to expand the application scope of butterfly valve.
Sealing performance is one of the most important technical indexes of Knife Gate Valve. Rubber seated butterfly valve (also called soft seated butterfly valve), and metal seated butterfly valve are the two existing types. The drawback of soft seated valve is that when functions as throttling valve, it may undergo cavitation damage due to misuse. Obviously the metal seated butterfly valve is made to solve this problem. With the cavitation being significantly reduced, it has a longer service life.
