Electric fireplace heaters not only provide warmth but aesthetic beauty without the harmful chemicals that are often released when materials burn. Whether there is a fireplace cut out already or a spot needed to be added, electric fireplace heaters are easy to install.
First, pick a spot for the fireplace. If it is going to replace a traditional fireplace, make sure the electric one will fit inside or in front of the traditional fireplace to cut down on extra work, and permanently seal the existing damper. This will keep the warm air in and the cold air out.
Next, build a hearth for your electric infrared heater. Use the opening of the fireplace as the top, and build a wooden square frame on the floor. Cut the boards in 45-degree angles for tight-fitting corners, and screw the boards together. Then, reinforce the corners with triangle blocks and screw those in as well. For additional support, wood glue can be used at the seams. Don’t forget to attach the frame to floor and make sure it is level at all points.
After the frame is complete and attached to the floor, cut a piece of plywood to place on top of the frame. The plywood should start at the back of the existing fireplace and extend to the edge of the hearth frame. Use wood glue to attach the plywood to the frame, then drill countersink holes and use wood screws to keep the plywood in place. And fill all of the screw holes with putty and add molding to the hearth if desired. Once everything is complete and dry, it’s time to paint or stain the hearth.
Now comes the easiest part – installing the electric fireplace heater. Each electric heater is different depending on the manufacturer, so it’s important to follow all instructions and directions provided.
Install the heater’s mount into the fireplace according to the included directions. With an appropriate bit, drill a hole in the side of the existing fireplace for the heater’s electrical cord and run the cord to the nearest outlet.
Fit the electrical convector heater into its mount and build a wooden frame around it in a design that matches the room’s décor. Once complete, paint, stain, or decorate the wood as desired.
